Ceiling fans are excellent home appliances to add to any room in any home. The problem comes in picking the right ceiling fan (or fans) for your home. Hopefully, this quick little ceiling fan buying guide will help you not only understand how and why a ceiling fan works on those hot summer days and cold winter nights, but will also walk you along some of the more important features and styles available that may just suit your taste a little better.

Why do I need a ceiling fan?

Everyone has there own reasons for needing a ceiling fan so I'd hope you would already have one by this point or else why would you even be here? But, the main reason that anyone needs a ceiling fan is to improve the air circulation throughout there home which, in turn, helps with the ventilation aspect as well. Not having good air circulation in your home can prove to be costly as it makes your heating/cooling systems work that much harder, using more energy, and costing you more money in the long run. Having ceiling fans throughout your house helps improve the effectiveness of these systems providing for better air circulation during both the summer and winter months.

How do they work and can ceiling fans lower my utility bill??

A ceiling fan can work to either cool your home when it's hot outside or to warm it up a bit when it's chillly. First, let's take it from a "cooling" perspective since that ones a bit easier to explain. To cool your home all you have to do is simply turn it on when you are running your air conditioner. The fan will spin and push the air down to you creating a "cooler" sensation as the cold air is moving closer to you. Because it's circulating the cold air it will make it feel like a nice cool breeze is blowing through your home. People will often times be able to turn their thermostats up a little more using a ceiling fan to circulate the air more thoroughly throughout their home and even save a few dollars on their electric bill

Now, to the harder one that takes into account a little physics and science. You can use your ceiling fan when it's cold outside to actually help heat your home. Most ceiling fans have a switch on them that when flipped one way, the fan spins clockwise and when turned the other the fan will spin counter-clockwise. The science of it is that warm air is less dense than cold air. The physics portion comes into play in that one substance that is less dense than the other will "float" above the more dense one. Thus, warm air rises above the cold air. With the fan switch turned to where the air will be pulled instead of pushed, will cause the warm air to bounce off the ceiling and be forced down the outside of the walls back down to ground level. There, it will mix with the colder air and make it feel warmer around you. See, you can still use your ceiling fan in the winter when it's blistering cold outside and snow's all over the ground.

What kind of ceiling fans are available?

When you start looking at ceiling fans, you need to keep in mind that you are not stuck with just one certain model, actually there are three different types you could choose from. These are as follows: the traditional hanging, directional, or rotational ceiling fan. Let's get into these a little bit further.

Traditional Propeller Ceiling Fans
These are exactly what most people picture as a ceiling fan and think that's all there is on the market. Not entirely true but we'll get into that in just a bit. These fans hang directly down from your ceiling and the blades are parallel to the floor. Now there are all kinds of these out there to be gobbled up. Some are shiny, some have an antique finish, some have 3 or 4 blades, others have 5 or 6. They've even started making some very retro, post-modern models that are quite exquisite even down to some rather neat rustic models and sleek aero-craft designs. Some hang high and very close to the ceiling to give you much more headroom while others can hang still comfortably from very tall, arched ceilings. Bottom line, the sky's the limit with this style of ceiling fan as there are just a multitude of fans to choose from. Here's just some of the bigger known manufacturers and some of the brands that I like. Casablanca, Westinghouse, Hunter, Emerson, & Monte Carlo to name a few.

Directional Ceiling Fans
These can get quite fun and yet still very functional and stylish. Directional ceiling fans are kind of a mix of those old standard fans but are mounted from the ceiling just like a traditional ceiling fan. The good part about these fans are that you can actually control the direction of the breeze to better ventilate certain portions or corners of the room. I've actually seen a master bedroom setup before with two of the directional fans near the front corners of the room pointing back towards the center of the room at the front of the bed. This type of setup can definitely get some air flowing towards anywhere you want it.

These are awesome smaller ceiling fans when you need to add some extra breeze to a room where maybe no additional lighting is needed as most all of these do not come with light fixtures. Matthews is a great brand for these types of fans.

Rotational Ceiling Fans
Rotational ceiling fans, simply put, are the best of both worlds. You get both the power and speed of directional ceiling fans with the ease and comfort of a traditional one. Rotational ceiling fans typically come with 2 sets of propellers that work independently and are adjustable.

This is really cool in that each set of propellers have their own motors. Thus really giving you two complete fans instead of one. The fans are connected and then attached to a traditional support rod that actually rotates. So as the saying goes, when the propellers turn, the rod turns allowing it to move like a traditional ceiling fan, just slower. What's really cool is that you can actually adjust the individual fans to either increase or decrease the angle of air flow to particular areas of the room.

Because of their ability to move air better and more effectively than a traditional fan, people have claimed that they are seeing an increased saving on their heating and cooling costs. Although I don't really know if that is true or not, it is what some are saying. One of the big downfalls of this ceiling fan model is that they are definitely more expensive than either of the other 2 models.

What kind of features are available for my ceiling fan?

Another thing to consider when looking for a new ceiling fan is what kind of features are available. Let's break this down a little further.

Feature 1: Lighting
Most all ceiling fans either come with lights or have a light kit that can be purchased and mounted to the fan. The only kind that really doesn't are directional ceiling fans. You can simply choose what kind and how many lights are on the unit. The single light units tend to use bigger lights that can light an entire room while the multi-light units offer a bit more form, functionality and class and can be used to direct light to certain area's of a room much more like a spotlight.

The more brand name ceiling fan manufacturers also offer a more contemporary option in lighting in that most of their ceiling fans are made to be able to match and coordinate with all the other light fixtures in your home. A good example of this type of lighting comes from the makers of Casablanca fans.

Feature 2: Controls
Controls are an important feature on any ceiling fan. Most standard models come with pull chains that can work (separately) both the speed of the fan and act as an on/off switch for the lights. Plus, most of these can be switched out to use a more standard wall mount fixture that allows you to control both the speed of the fan and set the light on a push button on/off dimmer switch. These make the lighting controls of the fans a bit more functional as you can dim the lights when you get ready to sit down and watch some TV or a movie.

A newer trend in the industry are remote controls. Now these can really spoil a guy, not only do you have a remote for the TV, but also one for the fan. Just imagine laying down in the bed and being able to grab the remote, turn the fan on, turn on the lights, and never get out of bed. Now that's comfort. Also, some models will allow for the remote to actually attach to a wall mount so it can be easily stored and operated from a wall like switch and removed when you just want to take it to the couch and relax.

Feature 3: Decorative
Baseball bats and fancy blades, attractive lighting and decorative base plates. These days, ceiling fans are becoming more and more specialized and the ability to either purchase a certain decorative style or upgrade certain pieces of it are becoming more and more attractive.

You can find these decorative ceiling fans in many different styles like Victorian or Contemporary, Antique or metal finishes, sports or bamboo. You're sure to find one to match any situation or decorative theme for most any room.

One of the cooler decorative features that I think have come out on the market lately are these canvas backed fan blades. But I'm a big sailing fanatic and to have a ceiling fan with blades that resemble sails from a sail boat are top notch in my book.

The Hampton Bay Hawkins ceiling fan is a 44-inch fan looks like it was designed specifically to work in those flat low-ceiling bedrooms.  This is definitely one of those indoor ceiling fans that uses a newer developed twist-and-lock type installation components. That is, you're not fiddling with those downrods on this one trying to get the right sized downrod so it hangs comfortably at the distance from the ceiling that you prefer. In fact, this ones made for those low ceilings so that it can hug it up close and tight. Perfect fit for those rooms that have 8-foot ceilings, plus the price is right at only around $70.

Hampton Bay 44 Inch Hawkins Ceiling Fan

Speaking of the twist-and-lock feature, what you'll find is that it actually gives the fan a more appealing look than what you'll typically find on traditional hugger type fans. Plus without having to mess with those downrods you should find the installation pretty much a breeze on this one, just don't loose your cool running the pull chains if you are going to install this yourself. It can get a little tricky and you need to make sure the right chains go thru the right holes, but it's not that hard and you can do it. I have done some searching around do see that there has been problems with the pull chains not working. But you can fix that as well if it doesn't work for you simply by removing 3 or 4 of the beads used in the speed pull chain of the Hampton Bay Hawkins ceiling fan inside the housing as that seems to be what everybodies problem has been as to why it wouldn't switch speeds. Haven't ran across that myself, but should work and does from what they all have been saying.

There are some solid plus's with this ceiling fan as well. The rubber wall mount that comes with the fan is a savior in making the fan "wiggle" free. You won't see this fan appearing to wobble at any speed you choose to run it on.  Plus it is whisper quiet. If you do hear some noise it's probably because some of the internal wires are rubbing on the motor. Check it before you finish the installation by turning it all on at all of the different speeds. If you still hear a noise, adjust the wiring inside and try it again. You shouldn't hear much of anything on this model.

Now down to the aesthetics.  The Hampton Bay Hawkins comes with 5 reversible blades, one side has kind of a distressed look while the other is more of a natural oak. So you can choose which side you'd like and simply install the blades that way. Want a more antiquey look, go with the distressed. Plus it comes with a very visual appealing half bowl light fixture, a Venetian Scavo glass, fancy name for smoked glass if you ask me that gets a little darker at the edges that takes 3x40 watt chandelier type bulbs. There has been quite a few complaints about the lighting on this model but I kinda believe that they've got to be taken with a grain of salt so to speak. Probably the room was to large or ceiling to high, get the fan for what it was designed for, smaller rooms with low ceilings and you probably won't have the lighting issue to deal with. I mean your only using 3x40 watt candelabra type bulbs here so the rooms shouldn't be that big where you are needing light. Oh, and you'll need to buy these lights extra to as they do not come with the fan itself. So if you want light, get some bulbs, and remember all bulbs are not created equal.

Overall this is a great little Hampton Bay fan. If you have the right sized room with low ceilings and want something that's going to look a little bit classy but not too much, maybe something for a guest room or older kids room, this would be a good fan to do the job.

Is there such a thing as a ceiling fan with heat? Absolutely. It's already a well known fact that utilizing a ceiling fan at the proper settings could be a tremendous blessing during those hot summer months in saving you some significant money on your electric bills. In fact if you use it right, you could save from an estimated 20%-40% on your cooling costs simply by adjusting your air conditioning up a couple of degrees and running your ceiling fans. This will push the hot air down from the ceilings where it tends to cummulate and circulate it with the cooling air thus cooling the overall temperature of the home providing better overall efficiency and could significantly lower your electric bills.

But what about during those cold winter months. Can't you just turn the fan on in reverse and push all that heat around to dispense it better throughout the home? Well, actually yes you can, but manufacturers have actually started producing heated ceiling fans that will not only redirect the heated air back down to the floor like a normal ceiling fan but it also contains a heating mechanism that reheats the air to give you some added energy efficiency on those heating bills during the winter.

There's nothing really special involved when you go to install a heated ceiling fan such that there's really nothing different installation wise from these to a regular ceiling fan. If there is already a light fixture installed it can definitely take the place of that. However, if there is no prior light fixture or ceiling fan already installed where you are planning to put this one, you'll run into your typical wiring installation woes that you would any other job. Most people aren't much for electrical or wiring type work as they tend to not like that little charge of electricity coarsing thru their veins if they make a mistake, or blowing out an entire electric panel/grid if they get it wrong, just kidding, but could happen. If this is you, stick to letting a good contractor or installation expert take care of that part for you. But if the wirings already run to a light fixture or ceiling fan in place, go for it, it's really not much different than installing a regular ceiling fan.

The main difference between these and regular fans is the heated ceiling fan has a built-in heating element. The big plus is that since heat typically rises you can continue to run the heated fan normally and simply turn on the heating element which will reheat the air while the fan redirects the warm air flow back towards the ground where you are and not towards the ceiling. Plus, you can turn the heating element on or off whenever you feel the need to use it.

With the housing market as it is even today, more and more homes are being built and not by the typical standards of yester-year. Homes with odd-shaped rooms and high-pitched roofs and ceilings and still more of the double-decker two-story homes are being built more and more every day. What's not being factored into the equation is that homes of this nature typically have a harder time with maintaining a desired temperature whether it's hot or cold due to their unique facets. What they find out is that it's sometimes hard to cool and heat. Even people who live in high ceiling houses find it takes much more than average to heat their house as the heat takes the natural course and escapes to the pitches in the high ceilings or simply escapes through other natural means like windows or vents or sliding glass doors. It doesn't even really matter if you have one of those good name-brand centralized heating and air conditioning systems, you'll still find that it's hard to get it properly circulated due to the inert properties of heat that makes it rise over cooler air. Try it for yourself, if you have high ceilings, put up a couple of temperature gauges and run the system for yourself. What you are going to find is higher temperatures towards the ceiling and lower temperatures at the floor. Get a couple of those stick on temperature guages and put one at the high-point of your ceiling and one at the floor level, you could even put one mid-way on the wall, and then you'll see for yourself just how good your system is working or not working.

Just because your ceiling is warm doesn't mean that you will be. You don't live on the ceiling do you? In fact, since heat rises, the last part of the room or house to get any heat to it all is the lower half of the home. You see, heat rises, warms the top and then as it can only reach a certain temperature it just slowly builds downward. But if you have a ceiling fan with heat you could correct this inadequacy as the ceiling fan would not only reheat the air but force it downward by pushing it towards the floor. That means that it will actually heat your home more efficiently as its forcing the heat down to where the cold air remained and making your heating system work less.

Not only that, but if the house is a two-story dwelling, a ceiling fan with heat could work wonders for you there as well. How many times do you hear that the bottom floor is freezing but you could just about roast a turkey in the upper level. Probably more often than not. You see, the problem is that the thermostat will typically read the temperature in the lower levels of your home. Even though the upstairs may be cooking, the down stairs is still cool to the touch. Brings us right back to the old heat rises theory once again. You could easily do yourself a favor here and install a couple of the ceiling fans with heat in some of the main rooms downstairs to not only pull that heat downward but reheat it as well. This will undoubtedly make everyone happy no matter what level they live on. Not only that, but again you'd be saving on your electric bill as these fans will pull much less watts than a heating system and just a slight bit more than a regular ceiling fan.

Comparing a heated ceiling fan to a regular ceiling fan, you won't really be able to tell much of a difference. They will all pretty much be visually appealing and nothing out of the ordinary will be protruding from the sides or anything like that. They look just like a regular sized 52 inch or 54 inch model. The only real difference is that so the heating element could be accommodated around the housing area, the heated ceiling fan may have a bit more in length.

Probably the best known model on the market today is the Reiker Room Conditioner. This heated ceiling fan is actually sold under the Hampton Bay ceiling fans name at Home Depot stores. You'll find it there as the Hampton Bay Brennero ceiling fans. They usually retail for around $350 from Home Depot. You can also pick up the Reiker model from most Lowes stores as well but they may be special order only so be sure to talk to a sales associate if you do happen by there. This fan works extremely well and does have a limited lifetime warranty so get the one that goes best with your decor and you'd probably be more than satisfied.

If you are going to put some wind in the utility room then I wouldn't think that you'd need one of the more pricier models when a simple 30-inch ceiling fan with some lighting would do. However, if you are going for a more formal look in a small dining room then maybe one of the more fancier models will take precedence, you know to impress those folks that you invite over to dinner and use the good plates on every now and then or maybe just to add some extra value to your home.

One thing to keep in mind though is that most of these smaller fans don't come with the wireless remote as most of them simply don't have the room to encompass the wireless connections. But you could always purchase that extra if you simply need it. My personal opinion on that though is that if you're buying a 30-inch ceiling fan for a small room that you are probably not going to be in all the time, save your money and forego the remote. Although cool, it's not really needed to run this kind of ceiling fan. It's not like you're sitting in the living room watching your favorite television show and not wanting to get up to either turn the fan up or down a notch or two to make your life more comfortable, you'll probably only be around these fans once in a while but they'll sure come in handy when you are.
