Westinghouse, once a household name in ceiling fans, is back, with the same quality it was known for throughout the “golden age” of ceiling fans in the late 19th and first half of the 20th centuries. But, the company just hasn't dusted off the old models. The Black Comet fan is a contemporary sleek design in matte black finish that will fit in any modern decor, in living rooms, great rooms, and large bedrooms.

The Westinghouse Black Comet ceiling fan is sized for a large room, with a 52-inch diameter, 5-blade fan at a very competitive price for the many features. The Black Comet has a matte black finish on the body and a marble-look black finish on the blades. The fan comes with an opal glass dome light with two 40-watt incandescent lamps. It has a reversible three-speed motor.

The kit includes a 4-inch down rod, but can be installed as a flush mount for lower ceilings. Optional down rods in graduated sizes are available for higher or angled ceilings, to install the fan at a 7-foot height above the floor with ceilings up to 16 feet.

The Westinghouse Black Comet fan sells at discount retailers and internet stores for about $100, which is a considerable savings over competitive models. But, this price does not include a remote control, sold separately for $40 to $60. If you don't need a remote, the fan itself is a good bargain, and still a good bargain with the remote added.

An installation instruction manual is included in the kit, but was not available on the Internet for review. But, as with all ceiling fan installations, do-it-yourself installers should have a helper and be familiar with electrical wiring and be able to ensure adequate structural support for the fan. Professional installation is recommended. If you add the optional remote control, the receiver electronics should be installed in the fan housing before installing the fan itself.

The Black Comet ceiling fan, built on decades of experience, is a stable platform, even though lighter than comparable models. The overall weight is less than 25 pounds. The motor body is cold-rolled steel, and the fan blades are wood. The fan includes a 25-year limited warranty, with a 20-year motor warranty. The sealed ball-bearing motor needs no lubrication.

The Westinghouse Black Comet ceiling fan can be a good bargain in a lighted large-room fan if you don't need a remote control or are willing to do a bit more assembly work to add one. The remote control could be added later, but requires removing the fan from its mounting and reinstalling.

Westinghouse is unique in offering a wide range of optional down rod sizes, so that you can place the fan at an optimum height regardless of the ceiling height. Westinghouse, in business since the late 19th century, is a respected name in electrical appliances and stands behind their products. Though the company is new to the 21st century ceiling fan scene, they have a long and successful history as one of the pioneers in quality ceiling fans.

The Hampton Bay Hawkins ceiling fan is a 44-inch fan looks like it was designed specifically to work in those flat low-ceiling bedrooms.  This is definitely one of those indoor ceiling fans that uses a newer developed twist-and-lock type installation components. That is, you're not fiddling with those downrods on this one trying to get the right sized downrod so it hangs comfortably at the distance from the ceiling that you prefer. In fact, this ones made for those low ceilings so that it can hug it up close and tight. Perfect fit for those rooms that have 8-foot ceilings, plus the price is right at only around $70.

Hampton Bay 44 Inch Hawkins Ceiling Fan

Speaking of the twist-and-lock feature, what you'll find is that it actually gives the fan a more appealing look than what you'll typically find on traditional hugger type fans. Plus without having to mess with those downrods you should find the installation pretty much a breeze on this one, just don't loose your cool running the pull chains if you are going to install this yourself. It can get a little tricky and you need to make sure the right chains go thru the right holes, but it's not that hard and you can do it. I have done some searching around do see that there has been problems with the pull chains not working. But you can fix that as well if it doesn't work for you simply by removing 3 or 4 of the beads used in the speed pull chain of the Hampton Bay Hawkins ceiling fan inside the housing as that seems to be what everybodies problem has been as to why it wouldn't switch speeds. Haven't ran across that myself, but should work and does from what they all have been saying.

There are some solid plus's with this ceiling fan as well. The rubber wall mount that comes with the fan is a savior in making the fan "wiggle" free. You won't see this fan appearing to wobble at any speed you choose to run it on.  Plus it is whisper quiet. If you do hear some noise it's probably because some of the internal wires are rubbing on the motor. Check it before you finish the installation by turning it all on at all of the different speeds. If you still hear a noise, adjust the wiring inside and try it again. You shouldn't hear much of anything on this model.

Now down to the aesthetics.  The Hampton Bay Hawkins comes with 5 reversible blades, one side has kind of a distressed look while the other is more of a natural oak. So you can choose which side you'd like and simply install the blades that way. Want a more antiquey look, go with the distressed. Plus it comes with a very visual appealing half bowl light fixture, a Venetian Scavo glass, fancy name for smoked glass if you ask me that gets a little darker at the edges that takes 3x40 watt chandelier type bulbs. There has been quite a few complaints about the lighting on this model but I kinda believe that they've got to be taken with a grain of salt so to speak. Probably the room was to large or ceiling to high, get the fan for what it was designed for, smaller rooms with low ceilings and you probably won't have the lighting issue to deal with. I mean your only using 3x40 watt candelabra type bulbs here so the rooms shouldn't be that big where you are needing light. Oh, and you'll need to buy these lights extra to as they do not come with the fan itself. So if you want light, get some bulbs, and remember all bulbs are not created equal.

Overall this is a great little Hampton Bay fan. If you have the right sized room with low ceilings and want something that's going to look a little bit classy but not too much, maybe something for a guest room or older kids room, this would be a good fan to do the job.

Is there such a thing as a ceiling fan with heat? Absolutely. It's already a well known fact that utilizing a ceiling fan at the proper settings could be a tremendous blessing during those hot summer months in saving you some significant money on your electric bills. In fact if you use it right, you could save from an estimated 20%-40% on your cooling costs simply by adjusting your air conditioning up a couple of degrees and running your ceiling fans. This will push the hot air down from the ceilings where it tends to cummulate and circulate it with the cooling air thus cooling the overall temperature of the home providing better overall efficiency and could significantly lower your electric bills.

But what about during those cold winter months. Can't you just turn the fan on in reverse and push all that heat around to dispense it better throughout the home? Well, actually yes you can, but manufacturers have actually started producing heated ceiling fans that will not only redirect the heated air back down to the floor like a normal ceiling fan but it also contains a heating mechanism that reheats the air to give you some added energy efficiency on those heating bills during the winter.

There's nothing really special involved when you go to install a heated ceiling fan such that there's really nothing different installation wise from these to a regular ceiling fan. If there is already a light fixture installed it can definitely take the place of that. However, if there is no prior light fixture or ceiling fan already installed where you are planning to put this one, you'll run into your typical wiring installation woes that you would any other job. Most people aren't much for electrical or wiring type work as they tend to not like that little charge of electricity coarsing thru their veins if they make a mistake, or blowing out an entire electric panel/grid if they get it wrong, just kidding, but could happen. If this is you, stick to letting a good contractor or installation expert take care of that part for you. But if the wirings already run to a light fixture or ceiling fan in place, go for it, it's really not much different than installing a regular ceiling fan.

The main difference between these and regular fans is the heated ceiling fan has a built-in heating element. The big plus is that since heat typically rises you can continue to run the heated fan normally and simply turn on the heating element which will reheat the air while the fan redirects the warm air flow back towards the ground where you are and not towards the ceiling. Plus, you can turn the heating element on or off whenever you feel the need to use it.

With the housing market as it is even today, more and more homes are being built and not by the typical standards of yester-year. Homes with odd-shaped rooms and high-pitched roofs and ceilings and still more of the double-decker two-story homes are being built more and more every day. What's not being factored into the equation is that homes of this nature typically have a harder time with maintaining a desired temperature whether it's hot or cold due to their unique facets. What they find out is that it's sometimes hard to cool and heat. Even people who live in high ceiling houses find it takes much more than average to heat their house as the heat takes the natural course and escapes to the pitches in the high ceilings or simply escapes through other natural means like windows or vents or sliding glass doors. It doesn't even really matter if you have one of those good name-brand centralized heating and air conditioning systems, you'll still find that it's hard to get it properly circulated due to the inert properties of heat that makes it rise over cooler air. Try it for yourself, if you have high ceilings, put up a couple of temperature gauges and run the system for yourself. What you are going to find is higher temperatures towards the ceiling and lower temperatures at the floor. Get a couple of those stick on temperature guages and put one at the high-point of your ceiling and one at the floor level, you could even put one mid-way on the wall, and then you'll see for yourself just how good your system is working or not working.

Just because your ceiling is warm doesn't mean that you will be. You don't live on the ceiling do you? In fact, since heat rises, the last part of the room or house to get any heat to it all is the lower half of the home. You see, heat rises, warms the top and then as it can only reach a certain temperature it just slowly builds downward. But if you have a ceiling fan with heat you could correct this inadequacy as the ceiling fan would not only reheat the air but force it downward by pushing it towards the floor. That means that it will actually heat your home more efficiently as its forcing the heat down to where the cold air remained and making your heating system work less.

Not only that, but if the house is a two-story dwelling, a ceiling fan with heat could work wonders for you there as well. How many times do you hear that the bottom floor is freezing but you could just about roast a turkey in the upper level. Probably more often than not. Brings us right back to the old heat rises theory once again. The only real difference is that so the heating element could be accommodated around the housing area, the heated ceiling fan may have a bit more in length.

Probably the best known model on the market today is the Reiker Room Conditioner. This heated ceiling fan is actually sold under the Hampton Bay ceiling fans name at Home Depot stores. You'll find it there as the Hampton Bay Brennero ceiling fans. They usually retail for around $350 from Home Depot. You can also pick up the Reiker model from most Lowes stores as well but they may be special order only so be sure to talk to a sales associate if you do happen by there. This fan works extremely well and does have a limited lifetime warranty so get the one that goes best with your decor and you'd probably be more than satisfied.

The Harbor Breeze Solstice is one unique looking ceiling fan sporting some old world charm and appeal. From it's very distinctive bronzed-rustic finish to the 5 ceiling fan blades that look like wooden palm leaves (very nice touch in my opinion) that also have a rustic look, you could definitely classify this one as a rustic ceiling fan. This fan could bring that missing piece to any room that has a darker more classy look and feel.

Let's talk about a little detail of the fan itself. Starting from an overall look, the fan displays a deep and rich rustic tone. At the top, you'll be able to mount it with a standard downrod mount that will allow for an extension if you want the fan to drop lower than the included downrod for those of you with high ceilings or open spaces. The housing to me on this fan is one of a kind. Almost in a semi tulip bulb shape I guess with broad vertical striping detail, really lends a touch of class to this fan. Then throw in the etched to perfection details of the blades that really do look like some sort of palms which makes you atleast think of nothing but gentles breezes, you'll actually be able to feel the breeze. The blades are a little wider than most typical ceiling fan blades are in much more of an oval shape than the typical polygonal or rectangle shaped blades. The light housing is fairly unique to this fan. With a semi-globed effect attached to the bronze drop light casing, it really adds to this uniquely designed ceiling fan.

Let's get down to the nuts and bolts on this particular fan. First let's start with what it is not. This is not an Energy Star qualified ceiling fan. The Harbor Breeze Solstice is not an outdoor ceiling fan. This particular fan does not have a CSA Safety listing or an ETL safety listing but does have a UL safety listing. What the Harbor Breeze Solstice is though is definitely one of those indoor ceiling fans that would bring some elegance to the right type of room. It's a 52-inch ceiling fan with a three speed reversible motor supporting some reverse air flow, so it would be good for all seasons. It has 5 blades and an excellent rustic bronze finish. And not only that it comes with a remote control and light kit included (with a 40 watt maximum bulb wattage.

I've only seen this fan installed in a couple of locations, one was a restraurant that had them lined up down the ceiling covering the whole dining area, looked really great. If you are going to put some wind in the utility room then I wouldn't think that you'd need one of the more pricier models when a simple 30-inch ceiling fan with some lighting would do. However, if you are going for a more formal look in a small dining room then maybe one of the more fancier models will take precedence, you know to impress those folks that you invite over to dinner and use the good plates on every now and then or maybe just to add some extra value to your home.

One thing to keep in mind though is that most of these smaller fans don't come with the wireless remote as most of them simply don't have the room to encompass the wireless connections. But you could always purchase that extra if you simply need it. My personal opinion on that though is that if you're buying a 30-inch ceiling fan for a small room that you are probably not going to be in all the time, save your money and forego the remote. Although cool, it's not really needed to run this kind of ceiling fan. It's not like you're sitting in the living room watching your favorite television show and not wanting to get up to either turn the fan up or down a notch or two to make your life more comfortable, you'll probably only be around these fans once in a while but they'll sure come in handy when you are.
